Dado rails are also referred to as picture or chair rails.

 

Dado rails are mounted horizontally on the wall around the perimeter of a room, normally at a height of 900mm. The traditional purpose of a dado rails is to protect the wall from the backs of chairs - but in the modern context they are purely used to create warmth and a clear defined space.

 

The use of dado rails is very effective in brightening up a dreary dull space because of our human tendency to search for order and lines in nature.
