Skirtings
Skirtings can be ordered in meranti, saligna and SA Pine.
Meranti
Meranti is imported from Malaysia and Indonesia and is moderately hard. Meranti works well, gives a smooth finish and stains exceptionally well. A serious drawback is the cost associated with it - pricing is directly linked to the R/US Dollar exchange rate and ultimately the price of crude oil (for transportation purposes). Price fluctuations are common.
SA Pine
Pine is a cheaper alternative. Pine stains fairly well (the yellow undertones remain visible through the stain), and looks beautiful with only a clear varnish applied. Long lengths are available, that cuts down on installation time.
Pine is more suitable for painting than Supawood.
Saligna
Saligna in many ways (except the price) has the same characteristics as meranti. The species work and stain well, and the end product is world class. Only shorter lengths, 2 - 2,4m are available, increasing installation time. It is classified as a hardwood and blunts work tools quickly. A mayor benefit is the cost - the initial purchase is 45% cheaper than meranti.
